Skin SSS

The Skin SSS (Subsurface Scattering) feature simulates the effect of light penetrating and scattering beneath the surface of translucent materials like skin, wax, or marble. This effect is particularly important for making character skin look more natural and lifelike.

Main Parameters

Use Skin SSS

A toggle to enable or disable the skin SSS effect.

SSS Color

The color of light as it scatters beneath the surface. For skin, this is typically set to reddish or pinkish tones.

SSS Intensity

Controls the strength of the scattering effect. Higher values create more pronounced SSS effects.

SSS Range

Controls how far light scatters beneath the surface. Higher values spread the scattering effect over a wider area.

SSS Mask

A grayscale texture that controls where the SSS effect is applied. White areas receive maximum SSS effect, while black areas receive none.

Usage

Skin SSS is useful for adding depth and realism to characters and organic materials:

  1. Enable "Use Skin SSS"
  2. Set an appropriate SSS color for your material (reddish/pinkish tones for skin)
  3. Adjust SSS intensity to control how pronounced the effect is
  4. Set SSS range to fine-tune the scattering distance
  5. Use an SSS mask if needed to control where the effect is applied

Things to consider when using skin SSS:

  • For skin, the SSS effect should be more pronounced in thinner areas like ears, nose, and fingers
  • An SSS mask can be used to enhance the effect in these areas
  • SSS color is typically set to reddish or pinkish tones to reflect the color of blood
  • For other materials (wax, marble, milk, etc.), choose colors that reflect the characteristics of that material
